Abstract: The JWST was successfully launched and deployed at L2 in late 2021/early 2022. Since then, the observatory has completed its commissioning period, and has started its ambitious science mission. Its performance has surpassed expectations in many aspects, and its first data have ushered in a new era in infrared astronomy. Particularly in the mid-infrared, the leap in spatial, spectral resolution and sensitivity from MIRI is huge, opening up a wide new parameter space in astrophysics - from our own Solar System to the high-redshift Universe. I will present the mission, and in particular the MIRI instrument, and some highlights and lessons learned from the commissioning period. The first science papers have demonstrated the power of the observatory, and I will show some of the early exciting results the observatory has produced
