Abstract: Conformal field theory plays a central role in our description of nature, from statistical physics to quantum gravity. It leads to many mathematical and computational challenges. In my talk, I will discuss surprising links between conformal field theory and classical topics in mathematics: the sphere packing problem, and Laplacian spectra of hyperbolic manifolds. In particular, I will explain how to adapt linear and semidefinite programming methods from conformal field theory to prove new theorems about spectral gaps of hyperbolic manifolds. |
