Accretion-Induced Collapse of White Dwarfs: A Pathway to Gamma-Ray Bursts and Heavy Element Nucleosynthesis
Tetyana Pitik, University of California, Berkeley
Event Type: Astro Seminar
Time: 2:00 PM - 3:15 PM
Location: 726 Broadway, 940, CCPP Seminar
Abstract: Accretion-induced collapse (AIC) of white dwarfs offers a compelling pathway to neutron star formation, potentially linked to long gamma-ray bursts and kilonovae. Building upon multidimensional simulations, this seminar explores how AIC can lead to neutron-rich ejecta, examining the conditions favorable for r-process element production and the associated observational signatures of these rare astrophysical events.
