Title: Neutron stars as axion laboratories
Abstract: Axions are amongst the most well-motivated candidates for new fundamental physics. In recent years, a variety of promising ideas have emerged focusing on how the extreme environments found near neutron stars can be used to advance the search for axions. In this talk, I will discuss two of these ideas. First, I will show how dense, gravitationally bound, axion "clouds" can form through non-thermal dynamical processes operating in localized regions of the neutron star magnetosphere. I will then discuss how large axion field gradients can be generated directly from the matter potential sourced by the dense nuclear matter of the star itself. In both cases, the characteristic axion field gradients near the surface of the star can be sufficiently large to alter the acceleration and production of plasma in the magnetosphere, leading to a number of distinctive signatures.
