Their output in broadband non-thermal radiation can outstrip the loss of rotational energy by three orders of magnitude, and their spindown torque can change by up to a factor of four over a period of months. This bizzare behavior can be understood in terms of deformations of the external magnetic field, which divert electric currents from the interior of the star into the closed magnetosphere. The charges that supply the current leave an observable imprint on the X-ray spectrum through cyclotron scattering. Pair creation in the ultra-strong magnetic field can occur through several channels which will be compared. The mechanism of particle acceleration will be analyzed, with a particular focus on the outer magnetosphere. |
