Andrea Cappelli, Hydrodynamics with anomalies and effective field theory (1:30 PM - 2:30 PM)

-- Abstract: Hydrodynamics can be viewed as a bosonic effective field theory. In particular, Euler perfect fluids admit a Lagrangian formulation, which is shown to be identical to the known field-theory bosonization in 1+1 dimensions. This correspondence allows us to introduce the chiral anomalies in hydrodynamics and to properly describe fermionic fluids. We employ the anomaly inflow from a topological gauge theory in one extra dimension, as done in the study of topological phases of matter. This method is also interesting because it suggests the fluid variables to be used. By extending the analysis to 3+1 dimensions, we obtain an effective field theory/hydrodynamics which is capable of elucidating the axial, vector and axial-gravitational anomalies of four-dimensional Dirac fermions in terms of bosonic fields.
