Simulating Black Hole Feasts, Burps, Fireworks, and Gravitational Waves
Sasha Tchekhovskoy, Northwestern University
Event Type: Astro Seminar
Time: 2:00 PM - 3:15 PM
Location: 726 Broadway, 940, CCPP Seminar
Abstract: Based on latest state of the art general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations, I will discuss how black holes feast on the surrounding gas, burp away their surroundings, and produce bright emission in a wide range of contexts, ranging from supermassive black holes at the centers of active galaxies to stellar-mass black holes in the context of neutron star collisions and collapsing massive stars. I will finish by discussing how jetted stellar collapse can power gravitational waves detectable by present-day gravitational wave detectors.
