ULTRASAT: Revolutionizing Our Understanding of the Hot Transient Universe
Eli Waxman, Weizmann Institute
Event Type: Physics Dept Colloquium
Time: 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM
Location: 726 Broadway, 940, CCPP Seminar
Abstract: ULTRASAT is a scientific satellite, that is planned to be launched toa geo-stationary orbit in Q4 2025. It will carry a telescope with anunprecedentedly large field of view (200 squared degrees) and UV(230-290nm) sensitivity. These unique properties will enable us todetect and systematically study transient astronomical events withinan extra-Galactic volume, that is hundreds of time larger than thataccessible to current observatories. ULTRASAT’s measurements will havea broad science impact across the fields of gravitational wavesources, supernovae, variable and flare stars, active galactic nuclei, tidal disruption events, compact objects, and galaxies. In this talk Iwill review ULTRASAT’s key science goals, its unique technicalproperties, and the project’s structure and status.
