Topological materials and relativistic fermions

Abstract: Over the past forty years there have been interesting parallel developments in condensed matter physics and relativistic quantum field theory: the theory of topological insulators and superconductors in condensed matter systems, and the theory of edge states, anomaly flow, and chirality in quantum field theory. I discuss how topological materials are ubiquitous in relativistic theories, and consider a couple ways that knowledge obtained in one field might advance the other. In particular, examples from condensed matter physics might point the way toward a nonperturbative regulator for chiral gauge theories, while the overlap operator from lattice QCD might provide new insights into the dynamics of edge states in condensed matter systems.
