Probing Galaxy Physics with Line Intensity Mapping

Abstract: Line intensity mapping (LIM), in which maps of the aggregate line emission from galaxies are produced over large volumes, has arisen as a promising probe of the physics of galaxies. However, the connection between galaxy properties and line emission is complex and expensive to predict over large scales using traditional hydrodynamic simulations, while most current LIM models are empirical and have limited interpretability. In this talk I will present improved LIM models using semi-analytic models (SAMs) of galaxy evolution. Next, I will introduce a new framework we have developed to infer the global distribution of galaxy properties from line intensity maps and galaxy survey. I will then discuss how EXCLAIM, a pathfinder LIM survey, can probe the cosmic star formation history given these models. Finally, I will present my latest work on probing the origins of the universe through LIM.
